Shahid Online – Netflix’s $320M sci-fi spectacle, The Electric State, has become one of the most expensive films ever made. Starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, the film entered the streaming giant’s catalog with grand ambitions. However, despite its staggering budget and star power, The Electric State has faced some of the most brutal reviews in recent memory. Critics have not held back, labeling it “soulless,” “dumb,” and “a visual disappointment.” Yet, numbers tell a different story the movie has skyrocketed to Netflix’s top spot, proving that in the streaming era, reviews may not dictate a film’s success.
Film critics have not minced their words when delivering their verdicts on The Electric State. The Times dismissed it as “a turgid eyesore” and “top-dollar tedium,” while The Hollywood Reporter called it “slick but dismally soulless.” The New York Times was equally harsh, branding it “obvious, garish, and just plain dumb.” Paste Magazine took a financial angle, describing it as “the most banal way you can spend $320M.”

Despite the scathing criticism, there have been a few positive takes. Empire found it “breezily watchable,” awarding it three stars, while The Telegraph went further, giving it four stars and hailing it as a “Spielbergian treat.” Still, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 15%, The Electric State appears to be more of a commercial hit than a critical darling.
Netflix’s $320M bet on The Electric State seems to have paid off in terms of viewership, regardless of critics’ disdain. The film soared to the number one spot on Netflix immediately after its release, proving that high-profile casts, big budgets, and escapist storytelling still draw in massive audiences.
Ian Sandwell, movies editor at Digital Spy, noted that while the film boasts “decent action and impressive robots,” it ultimately tells “a generic, seen-it-all-before story.” However, he concedes that in the age of streaming, bad reviews likely won’t deter audiences. “Had it been a theatrical release, negative reviews might have had an impact,” Sandwell explains. “But on Netflix, it will still be absolutely massive. I don’t think bad reviews will matter at all.”
Netflix’s $320M gamble on The Electric State reinforces a growing trend: in the world of streaming, audience engagement outweighs critical reception. Whether loved or loathed, this sci-fi blockbuster is undeniably a success.
