Shahid Online – Actor Rejects Mission: Impossible roles don’t happen often, but Billy Bob Thornton made headlines by refusing a major part in Mission: Impossible III. Despite being an action star with numerous films under his belt, Thornton declined the chance to face off against Tom Cruise in one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.
In a recent interview on the Bingeworthy podcast, Thornton revealed that he was initially considered for the role of Owen Davian, the villain in Mission: Impossible III (2006). However, he ultimately turned it down for personal reasons.
“I wasn’t really interested in roles like that,” Thornton admitted. “I didn’t want to wake up at 4 AM for five or six hours of makeup to play Green Goblin in Spider-Man (2002), and for Mission: Impossible III, I just didn’t want to be the guy trying to kill Tom Cruise. If you’re the bad guy in a huge movie like that, audiences remember it forever. I prefer roles that are more laid-back and unpredictable.”

While Thornton backed away, Tom Cruise pushed himself to the limit, continuing his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most daring action stars. In Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise performed a jaw-dropping underwater sequence inside an 8.5-million-liter tank designed to simulate a sunken submarine.
The extreme stunt required Cruise to wear a specially designed suit and mask while navigating a rotating debris-filled structure. However, the challenge wasn’t just the physical aspect. He also had to battle the effects of hypoxia.
“I was inhaling my own carbon dioxide,” Cruise explained in an interview with Empire magazine. “It builds up in your body and affects your muscles. You have to push through and stay conscious while performing.”
With each new installment, Mission: Impossible raises the bar for action-packed filmmaking. Director Christopher McQuarrie, a longtime collaborator of Cruise, described the underwater scene as one of the most demanding sequences ever shot.
“Tom was in a spinning structure filled with debris. We had to make it look chaotic and uncontrollable while ensuring he could navigate it safely,” McQuarrie said. “It was terrifying, exhausting, and incredibly challenging, but that’s the kind of intensity he thrives on.”
While Actor Rejects Mission: Impossible headlines might be rare, Billy Bob Thornton’s decision showcases how some actors prefer to take a different path in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise continues to redefine action cinema with his relentless dedication to high-stakes stunts.
